GLOOMY DAY HAS SILVER LINING!

As anyone living in Melbourne knows, April 12 was the coldest day since October 2014, with squalls of rain and hail, so it was with some trepidation we headed off to the market site. _We were daunted but not deterred!_
Half the stall-holders didn’t show up and only about a third of usual punters showed up. Possibly we benefited from less competition on the day! After learning more about the bears’ lives on bile-farms, most people bought something to support our cause and several happily made donations.

Given the conditions we weren’t overly confident about our takings.. So imagine our surprise and great delight to discover we had made almost $2000 for one wet morning! Added to pre-sales of $400, at $2386 it’s our second best total! Bear Market 2015_4Bear Market 2015_3

My friends brought a happy energy and enthusiasm to their volunteering on the day – I couldn’t do it without them! Heartfelt thanks to Bill, Chris, Annie, Miche, Leanne, Jo & Jo, Rose and Marg. Also to those of you who donated such great goodies for us to sell.

So it was indeed a gloomy day – but one with a Silver Lining! Read our latest newsletter here

Update on Jigsaw’s plight

Many of you have called or emailed, expressing your concern for Jigsaw and wanting an update about the situation in Vietnam.
**Why are we not surprised to discover that Mr Tien, the director of the Tam Dao NP,  has submitted a proposal to build his own wildlife park….in exactly the same area where AAF’s bear rescue centre is already located…..**
Mr Tien had lobbied the Ministry of Defence to issue an order to evict Animals Asia (based on a claim that the land is of “national defence significance”). However, an investment company has applied to develop a tourist development on the same land Animals Asia is being forced to leave. It is believed Mr Tien intends for his wildlife park to tie-in with the Truong Giang development.
**If Animals Asia is evicted from the site, Mr Tien would have no need to build a new wildlife centre, making use instead of the existing facilities that were built and paid for by Animals Asia. here’s**
Tam Dao N.P. director’s REAL intentions revealed

Many of you have called or emailed, expressing your concern for Jigsaw and wanting an update about the situation in Vietnam.

Why are we not surprised to discover that Mr Tien, the director of the Tam Dao NP,  has submitted a proposal to build his own wildlife park….in exactly the same area where AAF’s bear rescue centre is already located….

If Animals Asia is evicted from the site, Mr Tien would have no need to build a new wildlife centre, making use instead of the existing facilities that were built and paid for by Animals Asia.

This deceit has not gone unnoticed…

According to a report in Vietnamese newspaper Người Lao Động, Vietnam’s Ministry of Defence has been asked to _make clear why the land in Tam Dao National Park on which Animals Asia’s bear sanctuary is located has been declared to be of “national defence significance”._

At this stage we can only hope that this is a cautiously optimistic sign..

The request came at a meeting convened by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on Friday 26 October, which was attended by key government officials: the Ministry of Defence (MOD), the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment (MONRE), representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office, and the military commander of Vinh Phuc Province, where Tam Dao National Park is located.

Almost 50 of Jigsaw’s friends signed the petition and/or wrote to the Prime Minister of Vietnam, expressing their concerns about the unjust eviction order thrust onto AAF’s sanctuary in Tam Dao National Park.  But it’s not over yet. For those of you needing a bit more time you can still  make your voice heard on behalf of Jigsaw and his bear buddies!

I will continue to keep you posted on the plight of Jigsaw and his friends.

HAPPY NEW BEAR EVERYONE!

In December 2010, barely a year after starting our campaign, we reached our goal of $14,500, the amount needed to adopt and name our beautiful bear Jigsaw! Piece by piece we secured his freedom!

In fact we exceeded our goal!! People have continued to send donations and our current total is more than $15,500!

Your generosity has given us a strong foundation upon which to build our ongoing relationship with Jigsaw to ensure that he can experience the best life that an Animals Asia’s sanctuary can offer him.

Best of all, Animals Asia realised how keen we have been to adopt our bear and have had their eye on a very special bear for quite a while……….And so begins the story of Jigsaw, the Moon Bear.

Our very own Jigsaw !

Our very own Jigsaw !

Is that the face of a happy bear or what ???

I am currently working with Animals Asia to compile Jigsaw’s story to share with you. But I can tell you that Jigsaw was rescued early in 2010 in Vietnamand throughout the year your donations have been used towards his rescue, surgery and extensive rehabilitation. It is so inspiring to see that this beautiful animal who, just twelve months ago, was found incarcerated and emaciated in a ghastly cage inside a shipping container, now looks so alive and spirited and, let’s face it, so cheeky!!!!!

Stay tuned for more of Jigsaw’s story and ways you can help!Jigsaw
